About this book

Exterior Paints & Coatings — Complete Formulation Handbook is a print-grade technical reference covering the full range of exterior paint and protective coating types manufactured and used globally, with deep focus on Indian, Asian, and African market conditions. It spans 70 validated starting-point formulations across 17 sub-categories — from economy Portland cement paint and oil-bound distemper through mid-range acrylic masonry and textured coatings to premium self-cleaning weathershield systems, anti-corrosion metal primers, and specialty 2-pack FEVE fluoropolymer topcoats. Both waterborne (WB) and solventborne (SB) chemistry families are represented in every relevant sub-category.

The technology

The handbook builds on established coatings science with practical market rigour. PVC/CPVC theory is the governing design parameter throughout — all formulations are explicitly designed below their CPVC to ensure film integrity, with the safety margin adjusted for performance tier. Binder chemistry spans the full range: VAE and SA emulsions (economy), pure acrylic (premium), silicone-modified acrylic (specialty), FEVE fluoropolymer (ultra-premium), long-oil alkyd with methyl soyate (VOC-reduced SB), and Portland cement (mineral). UV stability is engineered via benzotriazole UV absorber + HALS packages, leveraging the synergistic UVA + radical-scavenger mechanism. The FEVE section explains C–F bond thermodynamics (Ediss ≈ 536 kJ/mol vs. UV photon at 320 nm = 374 kJ/mol) that make fluoropolymer coatings photolysis-resistant. Biocide selection follows the dual-mode principle: MIT/CMIT for in-can preservation and an OIT + IPBC or OIT + ZPT package for dry-film protection against algae, fungi, and bacteria. 2-component systems (2K WB epoxy-amine F62 and 2K FEVE-isocyanate F70) are covered with stoichiometric mix-ratio derivation from EEW/AHEW and OH-value/NCO content respectively.

Inside the formulations

All 70 formulations are structured across Economy, Standard, Advanced, Premium, and Specialty tiers within each of the 17 sub-categories. Every formulation gives a 100 kg reference batch component table (IUPAC names / function / % w/w), system classification (WB or SB), PVC and CPVC calculation, VOC as supplied (g/L or g/kg), manufacturing method and SOP reference, QC targets with cited test methods (ASTM, ISO, IS), DFT recommendation, application notes, stability and shelf-life guidance, and a scientific basis section anchored to the binder, cure mechanism, and functional chemistry. Mandatory hazard flags (⚠) are applied to isocyanates, epoxy resins, aromatic solvents, MEKO, all biocides, nano-ZnO, and aluminum paste throughout.

The Problem This Solves

Exterior paint formulation demands far more than interior — UV stability, carbonation resistance, biological fouling, thermal cycling, and tropical humidity all attack the film simultaneously. Get 70 validated starting-point formulations across every exterior coating type, ready to bench-test for Indian, Asian, African, and worldwide markets.

Who is this book for?

Paint Manufacturer

Questions & Answers

Frequently asked questions

They are validated starting points. You will need to bench-test and adapt treat rates to your specific raw material lots, but you start from a working formulation — not a blank sheet.

Yes. The handbook opens with a fundamentals section that explains the underlying chemistry and ingredient functions before presenting formulations — so beginners can follow the rationale, not just the recipe.

PVC (Pigment Volume Concentration) is the volume fraction of pigment and extenders in the dry film. Below the Critical PVC (CPVC), binder fills all voids and the film is impermeable. Above CPVC, voids form — the film is porous and fails at weathering. All 70 formulations in this handbook are designed relative to their CPVC, with the gap adjusted for the performance tier required.

Yes. Waterborne (WB) systems dominate — acrylic emulsions, silicone-acrylic, FEVE coalescent, Portland cement, and WB epoxy-amine. Solventborne (SB) systems are included where the market requires them: alkyd gloss enamel, oil-based distemper, SB alkyd metal primer, bituminous cutback, and 2K FEVE-isocyanate fluoropolymer.

Yes. Every sub-category spans Economy through Specialty tiers. SC01 for example runs from a VAE economy masonry paint at PVC 55% all the way to a silicone-acrylic specialty at PVC 38%. Indian and African market pricing is a primary design constraint in economy and standard tiers.

In-can preservation uses MIT/CMIT (BPR PT6). Dry-film algal and fungal protection uses OIT + IPBC or OIT + ZPT (BPR PT7/PT8). Self-cleaning coatings (SC10) add nano-ZnO photocatalysis and a silicone-acrylic binder for low surface energy. Every biocide entry includes BPR product type, typical dry-film dose, and regulatory status flags.

All sub-categories are designed with tropical performance as a baseline, not an option. SC10 (self-cleaning / anti-algae) and SC11 (weathershield) are specifically optimised for hot-humid conditions. SC06 (Portland cement paint) is the dominant exterior product in India and West Africa. Biocide packages, silicon-modified binders, and UV-stabiliser doses are all set for high-UV, high-moisture environments.
